Every June since 1995, some of the state’s best kayakers all congregate high up in the pristine Slate River Valley to compete in the steepest kayak race that has ever existed. The Oh Be Joyful Steep Creek kayak race is a long-held tradition in the Colorado boating community, signaling the start and kick off to our joyous creeking season.  The class V race brings out a group of usually 20 to 30 competitors from across the state, and often times from across the country. It is not uncommon for some of the big-name pro boaters to show up and try to take a podium spot from some of the local hucksters. Hundreds of spectators line the creek for a chance to watch racers fly off one of the several waterfalls or big slides that make up the 400fpm course. The race is structured as a time trial, with a one minute spacing between racers. Every racer gets to take the best time out of their two laps. Often fast times are on your second lap, as it is later in the afternoon and there is more water coming down the creek due to it’s close proximity to the headwaters. More water means a faster descent! The course starts out just below Ankle Breaker Falls and runs down to the eddy above Beaver Dam From Hell. Racers put on in the micro eddy right above the first ~15′ falls, the biggest boof and airtime is off the ramp right of center, but if you’re looking for speed the race line is to melt off the river left flake! Bomb down a few slides and an 8′ boof and try to catch your breath before the big one. The ~18′-20′ waterfall mid-course is where most spectators gather to see who throws the biggest boof, or who explodes and yardsales all their gear. After the big one, remember to breathe and exhale a sigh of relief, as all the gnarly stuff is behind you and there’s just one more big slide between you and that finish line. Once the race is all over, get ready to party! Racers and event staff volunteers get free food and beer at Talk of the Town in downtown Crested Butte. The race organizers (Big shout out to Paul Raymond) always have the raddest gear for prizes, almost all racers get to walk away with some sweet swag, but this year boasted cash prizes for those that made the podium. Whether you plan to compete or come to spectate, this premier event in the most beautiful setting is worth catching every year! Hope to see you out there next year.
